When user use the document library at first time, the excel file is trying to open using Excel service in web browser not client’s excel program.
However if your system administrator didn’t install Excel service you will have Error message
(Excel Services – We’re sorry. We ran into a problem completing your request. Please try that again in a fee minutes.)
So install the Excel service in Central administration following this instructions : https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219698.aspx
– register managed account
– grant content database access to the managed account using powershell script
– start the Excel Calculation Services service
– create an Excel Services service application
By default “Open Documents in Client Applications by Default” site collection feature is not activated so if you activate this feature the excel document will be opened using client’s excel program.
